This period of time I am up to upgrade the motherboard and CPU of my PC.
The new motherboard supports USB 3.0 mobile phone fast charge.
USB 3.0 mobile phone fast charge of (2014) this is designed to handle 1.9A charging current, 3A this is the absolute max.
In theory and according to specifications, the appropriate cable code this is:
E301195 AWM STYLE 2725 80ºC 30V VW-1 SUPER HIGH SPEED Revision 3.0
Modern mobile phones with requirements for faster fast charge (over 2A), these using cables named as High Speed Revision 3.1
The difference of 3.0 and 3.1 this has to do with the diameter of the pair of wires this be responsible for the DC supply.
Much older Fire-wire cables come with cable specification:
HIGH Speed HDMI Cable, E119932-U AWM, Style 20276, 80°C, 30V, VW-1
Such cable has the thinnest pair of wires for DC supply, especially if they are very old production.
Most motherboards which come with USB 3.0 mobile phone fast charge, they were include an 3.5” ( Floppy bay dimensions ) front panel, this including 2x USB 3.0 ports along 19pin connector for connection over the motherboard.
I got a used motherboard, the original Gigabyte USB 3.0 front panel this is missing.
Then started my research of getting a new OEM identical panel, (Gigabyte part number 12CR1-FPX582-21R ).
I did buy two of them from stock which I discover in Germany and they are now on the way to Greece.
By looking stock pictures of this OEM USB 3.0 front panel, I discovered a scam in some occasions.
A few no-name factory they did use Fire-wire cable than the appropriate E301195 AWM STYLE 2725 (HIGH SPEED Revision 3.0).
Fire-wire cable this has thinnest DC supply pair of wires than USB 3.0
USB 3.0 was born to deliver enough electrical power to external devices, starting from mobile hard drives, and up to mobile phone charging.
These tasks require 900mA DC supply.
Lossless cable for the DC supply alone, this is considered anything using AWG 22 that you may find such specification at branded cables only which them carry also the description of Highest quality cables.
To me as an electrician, right now it has born a new question, and this is what electrical test setup it is required, so to benchmark and or to measure, true DC supply potentials of USB 3.0 cables (extensions).
Another second way to get scammed, this is cable type:
E301195 UL AWM STYLE 20276 80°C 30V VW-1 SUPER HIGH SPEED USB Revision 3.0
Cable this is originally intended for Display port connections 32 AWG.
Now let’s summarize, oldest USB 2.0 standard this designed to deliver 500mA as max load at DC supply of 5V.
This can be served by thinnest wire down to 28AWG.
For USB 3.0 (powering external devices) we need better than that, thickest that I found at extreme quality cables this is at 22AWG.
Let’s talk metrics, 22AWG= 0.64mm (Best USB 3.0) 28AWG=0.32mm (Regular USB 2.0)
32 AWG=0.20mm (Fire-wire & Display port or HDMI cable).
If you ever buy an USB 3.0 front panel, or USB 3.0 extension, now you are able to detect if you were scammed or not.
